The Computing department at Newbridge high school endeavours to give pupils experience on the very latest technology and equipment. Our vision is for every pupil to benefit from the enhanced learning environment that modern technology can provide.
We have three fully equipped PC suites, a brand new media suite boasting 32 iMacs and have recently brought tablet computers into areas of the curriculum where appropriate.
The Computing department has three key areas that students cover in all three year groups – Computing, Digital Literacy and Information Technology. These areas combine to give a broad, practical and academic experience to all pupils. Using the techniques, skills and knowledge gained through these courses will give each pupil to master modern technology to assist them in their daily lives, and the rest of their academic career.
As well as discrete lessons given to all year groups, many of the skills learnt here are consolidated and used across the whole school in each subject area.
In Year 7 Computing, students are introduced to the skills needed to become a successful computer programmer. They are expected to develop patience, resilience and to pay attention to details. They will then put these skills into practice through a spreadsheet development project.
In their second carousel, they will be learning the HTML5 computer language and creating and developing their own websites.
Both of these projects will be looking to promote the skills of self-management, which include organisations, working to deadlines, planning ahead and managing your emotions.
In Year 8 Computing, students this year will be learning the basics of computer hardware. This will include how computers store and retrieve data, binary code and logic gates. In addition, they will also begin, in their first carousel, to learn the general-purpose computer language Python – its syntax and structure so that they can read and understand code.
When they return to Computing for their second carousel, they will be putting their Python skills into practice in a programming project to create an online text-based adventure game.
The self-management skill will also be promoted here, with an emphasis placed on independent learning and individual problem-solving skills.
In Year 9 Computing, students this year will be following a similar course to the year 8 students as they have now switched to a Computing curriculum from an ICT based one. They will also be learning the basics of computer hardware. This will include how computers store and retrieve data, binary code and logic gates.
In addition, they will also begin to learn the general-purpose computer language Python – its syntax and structure so that they can read and understand its code. They will be putting their Python skills into practice in a programming project to create an online text-based adventure game.
Greater complexity, more information and a more in-depth task will test them to a higher level. The self-management skills expected from students this year will include the ability to set work priorities and developing the self-discipline to work to them, as well as managing an ongoing project over time.
